About the Book

In this second volume, Dr Andrew Powell continues his wide-ranging exploration of the place of spirituality in mental healthcare. Clinical papers are interspersed with reflections by the

author on his many years of therapeutic practice and exploration of the inner life.

The present climate of materialist science has led to an unremitting search for the biological causation of mental disorders, accompanied by heavy reliance on prescription drugs. Andrew Powell offers a vision of health and wholeness that goes beyond the limitations of the physical sciences, drawing attention to an ever-present spiritual reality that accompanies us through life, and shows how in times of pain and confusion the wisdom of the soul can be called upon to bring clarity, purpose and renewed hope.

‘This publication reflects Andrew Powell’s impressive clinical skill, empathy and openness in exploring spirituality as a path to healing and recovery from mental distress. To date, biomedicine has no concept for the healing potential of the human spirit. Andrew Powell makes good this failing in a volume of far-reaching papers, which offer privileged access to the insights of the author that are both personal and professional. Highly commended for all concerned with mental health who question deeply the meaning and purpose of life’. Professor Alexander Moreira-Almeida, Chair of the World Psychiatric Association Section on Religion, Spirituality and Psychiatry.

‘Andrew Powell is uniquely qualified to write about the interface between spirituality and psychological wellbeing. For many people, spirituality is a fundamental characteristic of their identity as a conscious being, yet it has been virtually excluded from mainstream science and medicine. In this volume, the author presents deeply challenging material with sensitivity and wisdom, bringing a perceptive insight that gives us pause to reflect on our strongly held assumptions about ourselves and our place in the world’. Professor Chris Roe, Chair of the Transpersonal Psychology Section of the British Psychological Society.
